Webcast: This event will be webcast live beginning at 10:00am EDT on October 23, 2012 at www.usip.org/webcast. Online viewers will be able to engage panelists and each other through live chat and Twitter discussions (Hashtag: #PeaceEcon).
PeaceCreating a sound economic policy and a stable macroeconomic framework is essential to societies recovering from violent conflict, yet few practitioners have the background needed to apply economic concepts effectively. USIP’s new publication titled “Peace Economics: A Macroeconomic Primer for Violence-Afflicted States” provides a concise but broad overview of practical ways that sound macroeconomic fundamentals could be used to build stability in states that are affected by violent conflict.
peaceThe discussion extends beyond economic principles into the wider realm of social reconstitution, social contract, and social capital. Co-authors, Jurgen Brauer and J. Paul Dunne, examine recent case studies and illustrate the applicability of concepts presented in the book.

Creating a peaceful and positive 2012

A GLOBALLY SYNCHRONISED CELEBRATION FOR DECEMBER 21ST 2012

Oct. 2012

A Moment Of PeaceWhat if, for one moment, all humanity could be united in a shared experience of peaceful gathering?

What if, for one moment, we all stop and reflect on what we have in common, rather than what divides us?

On December 21st 2012, the solstice synchronizes exactly with the end of a 5,125-year cycle in the Mayan calendar. The goal of the 'moment of peace' is to use this unique moment in time to create a global experience of unity.

The Universal Declaration of Peace.
The moment of peace begins with the 'Universal Declaration of Peace', a multi-cultural statement that incorporates affirmations of peace from all the world's great spiritual traditions and cultures. The Declaration will then lead into a simple moment of silence, a universal moment of reflection that anyone and everyone can participate in.
Can we use this moment to create real change in the world?
We believe so and invite you to participate.

The United States used as one of it's excuses for the IRAQI WAR, women's rights, and that they were going to bring educational equality to Women in both Iraqi and Aphganistan. The results so far are dismal, of the promised thousands of schools available only a hundred are functioning, and most do not include girls.

Malala Yousafzai
Malala Yousafzai women's right to education, shot by Taliban

When it comes to making War, and finding in this 21st century world a reason the U.S. has led the way, while at Home, women's equality of equal pay, as well as Pro choice rights, are being dealt blow after blow by the U.S. Congress and Presidential candidates. The question is, can the U.S. find at home or globally a policy for women's rights which does not exploit them and only make, "promises"?

Malala Yousafzai now hospitalized in Pakistan and her life threatened, is but one heroic women's efforts for education, yet where is the U.S. outcry, nearly mute. Will this double standard now cost hundreds of lives, while the U.S. still fights it's war at home and abroad against women?

Peace and a Peace monument possible in a city of Sin, excess, and loss? Well, the people who live there want a "New Vegas" as they call it, one headed in a new direction and offering them opportunity for economic and personal growth. They are calling for more culture, art, high tech business'. This direction has already begun and is being lead both by Mayor Carolyn Goodman and Tony Heish CEO of Zappos with his $468 million investment in arts  & music festivals, housing, schools, restaurants and a new high tech incubator tech park like Google's. Recently they were joined by the global "Burning Man Arts Festival brought on by Zappos, to create both temporary and "permanent" art works and art installation year round, and could this team take on what some in Vegas are calling for: Peace?

Mathew Ryan, Terry Miller who has started the Make Peace Vegas project, is now joined by dozens of other citizens and they are pushing for the image booster called the "Make Peace" sculpture and a park to go with it. To quote Mathew: "Higher ideals for those who live here are needed, while certainly the big casinos, can focus on sex and gamboling. We live here, have families, lives and want a "Livable, growing diverse community, with new buiness', jobs and a positive image, the Make peace project is just that kind of beginning, for us."

Except from Petition online:

"We are petitioning the city of Las Vegas, Nevada to build a MAKE PEACE sculpture and make peace park as a part of the positive image building effort, which is already taking place with Zappos & Burning Man Art projects in Las Vegas' new downtown.

Geeks technology and making world peace?

The project aims to design and develop a comprehensive virtual infrastructure for peace promoting individuals and groups. and indirectly supporting their activities by introducing an Information Technology dimension to their work.

Every cellphone can be a peace making tool!

Furthermore, the project aims to become the central reference - information - and meeting point, which will be providing different types of support, information, ideas and inspiration to the various peace building initiatives. In order to be able to establish a culture where people/users have incentives to use the Tech4Peace portal, we try to make sure that its design and construction encompass flexible technological solutions

The purpose of all these is to establish a sense of community to the users world wide, and to help make the users feel comfortable about using the Tech4Peace portal for beginning their journey for “Peace” from there as opposed to the time-consuming procedure of wondering all over the Internet.

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF PEACE?

Can U.S. admit the need for peace making?

love and peace

"I cannot tell you with what weapons mankind would fight WW3, but I can assure you that WW4 would be fought with sticks and stones."

~ Albert Einstein

There is currently a bill before the U.S. House of Representatives to establish a United States Department of Peace. This historic measure will augment our current problem-solving options, providing practical, nonviolent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict.
The legislation will pass from bill to law under one condition: that a wave of citizen interest rise up from the American people and make itself heard in the halls of Congress.
During the 20th Century, over 100 million people lost their lives to war -- most of whom were non-combatants. Now, at the dawn of the 21st century, the extent and current speed of nuclear proliferation makes the achievement of non-violent alternatives to war the most urgent need of the human race.

A Department of Peace will work to:

  • Provide much-needed assistance to efforts by city, county, and state governments in coordinating existing programs; as well as develop new programs based on best practices nationally
  • Teach violence prevention and mediation to America's school children
  • Effectively treat and dismantle gang psychology
  • Rehabilitate the prison population
  • Build peace-making efforts among conflicting cultures both here and abroad
  • Support our military with complementary approaches to peace-building.
  • Create and administer a U.S. Peace Academy, acting as a sister organization to the U.S. Military Academy.
  • And more…
From the growing rate of domestic incarceration to increasing problems of international violence, the United States has no more serious problem in our midst than the problem of violence itself. Prison-building is our largest urban industry, and we spend over 400 billion dollars a year on military-related expenditures. Yet there is within the workings of the U.S. government, no platform from which to seriously wage peace. We place no institutional heft behind an effort to address the causal issues of violence, diminishing its psychological force before it erupts into material conflict. From child abuse to genocide, from the murder of one to the slaughter of thousands, it is increasingly senseless to merely wait until violence has erupted before addressing the deeper well from which it springs.

The problem of violence is a many layered one, and its solution will be, as well. While no one action -- governmental or otherwise -- will provide a single solution to such an entrenched and deeply rooted problem, we must treat the problem itself as an all-systems breakdown requiring an all-systems response.

The campaign to establish a U.S. Department of Peace is only one aspect of a fundamental response to the problem of violence, but it is critical. It represents an important collective effort, as American citizens, to do everything we possibly can to save the world for our children's children.

Throughout America, there are countless peace-builders and peace-building projects. Those skilled in ameliorating the effects of violence - from conflict resolution experts to nonviolent communicators - have proven their effectiveness at treating root causes of violence. Peace is more than the absence of war; it is a positive state of being predicated on the presence of a peaceful heart. The mission of the Peace Alliance is to move this realization from the margins of our political dialogue to its rightful, central place within our national understanding. The humanitarian impulse to foster brotherhood and justice is not just an utopian ideal; it is an issue critical to our national security.

Domestically, the Department of Peace will develop policies and allocate resources to effectively reduce the levels of domestic and gang violence, child abuse, and various other forms of societal discord. Internationally, the Department will advise the President and Congress on the most sophisticated ideas and techniques regarding peace-creation among nations.

The Peace Alliance educates and inspires thousands throughout the country with the knowledge, skill and enthusiasm to become powerful citizen activists on behalf of the Department of Peace legislation. Our campaign has citizen organizers working in all 50 states. Local activists are mobilizing a mighty wave of momentum by working with their members of congress, writing editorials, doing local radio and TV interviews, organizing local talks and trainings, getting city council endorsements, visiting with Police Chiefs, Fire Chiefs, Military Officials, Prison Officials, Directors of Abuse Shelters, School Boards, etc. to share and discuss how a Department of Peace would benefit their community.

Take Action! Tell Congress to get behind H.R. 808, legislation to establish a U.S. Dept. of Peace.

More you can do at the peace alliance

Below is an email from Helen F. Chavez, the widow of Cesar Chavez. Helen started a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition.
Stand with Helen Chavez: No human being is "illegal."

Sign the petition

My name is Helen Chavez, and I am the widow of Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers. All these years, I chose to stay in the background. I never spoke in public or did an interview with a reporter.

But I'm speaking out now—because after all these years it is no longer acceptable for respected news organizations to refer to human beings as "illegal."

An action can be illegal—a human being cannot be. Calling a person "illegal" is dehumanizing, and all Latinos, especially our children, feel the pain when this word is uttered.
That's why I started a petition on SignOn.org calling on major news organizations—starting with The New York Times—to end the dehumanizing practice of calling people "illegal."

Click here to sign the petition: Stop using the word "illegal" to refer to farm workers and other Latinos.

Back in 1962, farm workers were treated as though we were agricultural tools. One grower called us "rented slaves." Working in the fields, I remember we were called "wetbacks," "dirty Mexicans," and worse. It was common then in parts of our country for African-Americans to also be degraded by those who called them the "n" word or used stereotypes because of their skin color or who they were.

Today, farm workers and many other immigrants do important work for low pay and under miserable conditions. We harvest the greatest bounty of food in the world. We spend our lives laboring in service jobs where we make beds, clean rooms, cook meals, and care for the young and the elderly. We work in construction and manufacturing. We serve our country in the military.

Why should we tolerate farm workers and other Latinos being treated this way? Some day not long from now people will look back and ask, "How could people call other people names like illegal?"

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Helen F. Chavez, widow of Cesar Chavez

This petition was created on SignOn.org, the progressive, nonprofit petition site. SignOn.org is sponsored by MoveOn Civic Action, which is not responsible for the contents of this or other petitions posted on the site. Helen F. PEACE-O-MATIC MANIA GRIPS WORLD

 PEACE JOKES IDEA SPREADING GLOBALLY

Oct. 2012
Peace-Omatic mania! What is Peace-o-matic anyway? Well is a couple of thing, first it started out as an idea to promote Peace thinking and thoughts by creating an APP and giving it away for free. The FREE APP is still looking for a developer, who'll do it for free, and an APP developer may just step in soon considering this:

The Peace-O-Matic has become a universal catch all character, phrase, coupled with and inserted in the stupid, funny, original, silly series of jokes I've seen in a long time.  One can only give you some sample of how millions, mostly college students, but the range is growling fast, are making up and using the word "Peace-O-matic" in a humor context.

Peace-O-matic APP logo

Here go the Peace-O-matic jokes:

Why is the Peace-O-matic like a girdle? It keeps things tightly in focus.

Why do Gay men love the Peace-O-matic? Its easy, quick, and comes in a lot of different sizes.

Why is the Peace-O-matic like a man wearing tight jeans? Because peace is always pushing forward.

What did Paris Hilton say when she fist saw the Peace-O-matic? Does it shoot video too?

What does "the Secret" have in common with a Peace-O-matic? They both make you feel good while your broke.

And the Peace-O-matic jokes are international too:

What did the Peace-O-matic say to the Rabbi? What where the names of the two Jews walking down the road? The Rabbi immediately replied: “Juan and Kipper”. The Peace-O-matic stunned by the speed of the response quizzically looked at the Rabbi?
The Rabbi then said: “Hey don’t take it so hard, I’m Jewish, a Rabbi, and I hear those dumb jokes all the time.

What did the Peace-O-matic do, to get away from the cold in Russia? The Peace-O-matic sang twenty chorus' of the "Volga Boat Song" after downing, four bottles of vodka.

Was the Peace-O-matic hung over after four bottles of Vodka? No, but waking up, face down in frozen snow hurts an awful lot more.

Why was the Pope caught in the bathroom with a Peace-O-matic? Peace is fun!

Well that is enough of a start, dumb, smart jokes, you dear reader will have to create the next one, and that is exactly what millions of people are doing all across the world.

Yep, Peace-O-matic jokes can take any kind of old joke format, such as Dumb Blond joke, Polish jokes, Religious Jokes, Nationality jokes, car jokes, Chicken jokes and turn them into something wacky, sometimes hilarious, often the head banging dumb jokes we all love.

Well who started all this: an artist, writer, and peace sculpture maker named Paul-Felix Montez who it seems has dedicated himself to finding original ways of promoting Peace world wide, from his "Make Peace" new proactive peace sign, to "Make peace sculptures in stainless steel with some as tall as 60 feet, to the Peace-O-matic Mania World peace joke challenge. "Let's face it Peace is not promoted enough, and least of all in art works, humor and a interactive way for all us in our daily lives or in our communities".

So if you want to learn more about the Peace-O-matic Go to: www.PeaceOmatic.com

And if you want to see the cool: "Make Peace artowrks, sculptures and more, and they are amazing, and sadly needed in a lot of communities I know of:

www.makepeaceart.com

This is one new story that I definitely want to follow, its fun, interesting and does something productive, it gets us thinking about peace.

PEACE IMPACT INVESTING

HELP FOR MILLIONS WORLD WIDE FROM SILICON VALLEY

percentforpeace.com
Peace Maker News world wide

Venture capitalists in Silicon Valley know a good opportunity when they see one. And this week, investors and entrepreneurs flocked to San Francisco's fourth annual Social Capital Markets (SOCAP) conference to explore how the invisible hand can lend a helping hand.

In the world of finance, ROI -- "return on investment" -- rules the day. But there is a new kind of investor nowadays seeking a different kind of return. We call them impact investors, and they seek to put markets to work for millions of people around the globe -- from the Tenderloin to the slums of Mumbai -- who struggle with hunger, homelessness, disease, and environmental degradation.

Until recently there were not many opportunities for socially conscious investors -- either institutional or individual -- to pursue financial returns and the greater good with the same investment. But that's all changing, thanks to the emerging field of impact investing, and the impact investors who are building a new kind of marketplace in which financial and social returns are closely linked.

As SOCAP participants know all too well, for-profit capital markets hold more than $100 trillion in opportunity. So this week's conversation keyed on simple, but powerful questions: "How can we tap into these enormous private capital resources that are looking for places to invest? Can we catalyze the markets to invest in solving social challenges?"

The response to these queries has been extraordinary. One survey of just 42 investors showed approximately 2,200 impact investments last year worth nearly $4.5 billion. And these impact investors are incredibly diverse: private equity and public pensions, foundations and major corporations, retail investors, governments and community banks

At the Rockefeller Foundation, we're focused on unlocking more of this innovative form of financing. Like any new industry, impact investing needs common tools to assess what does and doesn't work, and facilitate and implement new ideas. So over the past five years, we've committed our philanthropic dollars to help build the critical, long-term platforms, networks and capacity that will accelerate the field's forward momentum and benefit millions of poor or vulnerable people.

We've brought together institutional investors like TIAA-CREF and J.P. Morgan to create the Global Impact Investing Network, a forum for identifying and addressing systemic barriers that hinder the industry's efficiency and effectiveness. The GIIN Investors Council now has 50 members, ranging from banks to pension funds to family offices. Likewise, we've supported the development of objective, credible standards for measuring and communicating the social impact of these investment funds and the companies in which they invest, including rating over 250 such companies.

Closer to the ground, the Rockefeller Foundation has helped build demand for these investments, for instance, seeding a social stock exchange in Singapore and cultivating the small and growing businesses that have the potential to become a potent engine of economic and social change in the developing world. Many of these projects have involved exciting new types of public/private partnerships, with governments, foundations, nonprofit organizations and private investors rethinking how they leverage capital.

One of the most innovative of these public/private initiatives is called a "social impact bond," which uses philanthropic and private capital to scale proven, effective social services (e.g. prisoner re-entry programs) that save the government enough money to repay investors down the line. Because investors are only repaid if the program succeeds, social impact bonds allow cash-strapped governments to experiment with evidence-based, outcome-oriented solutions to social challenges without putting taxpayers' money at risk.

On the West Coast, the Rockefeller Foundation is working with state governors and treasurers to develop a tri-state infrastructure exchange that will streamline the planning, financing and construction of vital projects. This will allow big institutional investors like CalPERS to fund a toll road or alternative energy plant and reap a 10-15 percent return over the next several decades -- filling potholes as well as pensions.

At this stage of development, we've reached an unprecedented opportunity to transition from piloting programs to changing lives. With federal and state budgets tight, with more investors than ever eager to align their investments with their values, there's never been a better opportunity to bring our markets and our morals together in service of a better world.

ONE NATION, ONE HURT, BEHIND RIOTS!

Middle East view vastly differs with Western freedoms.

Freedom has many forms,The Middle east views which led to riots and the murder of U.S. Ambassador of Libya Chris Stevens, supposedly over the Anti Muhammad video "Innocence of Muslims", has been driven by another set of values and concepts of freedom, unique to the middle east region, while western views of the individual and freedom of speech clash with the central beliefs that hold all Muslim societies and countries together, religion is greater than nations, greater than anyone person, thus when religion is insulted or attacked, all are attacked and insulted, all are hurt:

Excerpt N.Y. Times: Entire Story @ N.Y. TIMES WORLD

“We want these countries to understand that they need to take into consideration the people, and not just the governments,” said Ismail Mohamed, 42, a religious scholar who once was an imam in Germany. “We don’t think that depictions of the prophets are freedom of expression. We think it is an offense against our rights,” he said, adding, “The West has to understand the ideology of the people.”
Even during the protests, some stone throwers stressed that the clash was not Muslim against Christian. Instead, they suggested that the traditionalism of people of both faiths in the region conflicted with Western individualism and secularism.

Several protesters said during the heat of last week’s battles here that they were astonished that the United States had not punished the filmmakers. “Everyone across all these countries has the same anger, they are rising up for the same reason and with the same demands, and still no action is taken against the people who made that film,” said Zakaria Magdy, 23, a printer.
In the West, many may express astonishment that the murder of Muslims in hate crimes does not provoke the same level of global outrage as the video did. But even a day after the clashes in Cairo had subsided, many Egyptians argued that a slur against their faith was a greater offense than any attack on a living person.
“When you hurt someone, you are just hurting one person,” said Ahmed Shobaky, 42, a jeweler. “But when you insult a faith like that, you are insulting a whole nation that feels the pain.”
Mr. Mohamed, the religious scholar, justified it this way: “Our prophet is more dear to us than our family and our nation.”
Others said that the outpouring of outrage against the video had built up over a long period of perceived denigrations of Muslims and their faith by the United States or its military, which are detailed extensively in the Arab news media: the invasion of Iraq on a discredited pretext; the images of abuse from the Abu Ghraib prison; the burning or desecration's of the Koran by troops in Afghanistan and a pastor in Florida; detentions without trial at Guantánamo Bay; the denials of visas to prominent Muslim intellectuals; the deaths of Muslim civilians as collateral damage in drone strikes; even political campaigns against the specter of Islamic law inside the United States.

PEACE IN A SUITCASE?

U.S. 'Internet in a Suitcase' hurts Repressive Governments

The United States "Peace in a suitcase program" effort to maintain Internet and mobile phone service for citizens in countries where repressive governments use censorship or shut down telecommunications in the face of dissent.

Next time you travel Overseas you could pack light, & end up working for the U.S. State dept.

The State Department-led project involves the building of independent phone networks in foreign countries and the creation of a $2-million prototype "Internet in a suitcase" by an entrepreneurial outfit operating out of a building on L Street in Washington, D.C., The New York Times reported.

The idea is to fit innocent-looking hardware components into a package that could easily be taken into a repressive country and quickly assembled to deliver wireless service across a wide area to maintain crucial communications between legitimately protesting citizens, according to The Times, which cited "dozens of interviews, planning documents and classified diplomatic cables" it obtained.

"We see more and more people around the globe using the Internet, mobile phones and other technologies to make their voices heard as they protest against injustice and seek to realize their aspirations," Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was quoted as saying by the paper.

"There is a historic opportunity to effect positive change, change America supports. So we're focused on helping them do that, on helping them talk to each other, to their communities, to their governments and to the world."
In addition to the "Internet-in-a-suitcase" project, the State Department is funding "stealth wireless networks" in Iran, Syria, and Libya, among other countries.

Foggy Bottom and the Pentagon are also teaming up on a $50-million project to build an independent cellphone network in Afghanistan—where the Taliban has been able to shut down service "seemingly at will" —with cell towers located on military bases in the country, the newspaper reported.

The "Arab Spring" uprisings of the past several months have drawn attention to network shutdowns and censorship conducted by regimes under threat like the Syrian and Egyptian governments as they attempt to stifle protesting citizens' ability to communicate with each other and to inform the outside world of what's going on in the protest zones.

The Times noted that the Obama administration's "shadow" Internet project is ambitious, but could be considered a next step in decades-long U.S. efforts to foster democratic, potentially U.S.-friendly movements in countries with hostile regimes through media like its Voice of America radio broadcasts.

The various projects incorporate both U.S. government-developed technologies and "tools that have already been created by hackers in a so-called liberation-technology movement sweeping the globe."

Footnote:
Hey, there can be no peace until everybody has home internet service world wide, right?

MUSIC TO STOP GLOBAL POVERTY

Global Citizen Festival, With Neil Young, to Combat Poverty

Global Citizen Festival Neil Young and Crazy Horse played in Central Park on Saturday as part of this event organized to combat poverty around the world. More Photos »

The headliner was Neil Young with Crazy Horse, the band that has perfected rock as a primordial stomp. Sharing the lineup were guitar-driven bands that have obviously listened closely to Mr. Young through the years: Foo Fighters, the Black Keys and Band of Horses. It was a narrow, old-school, all-male slice of rock, with a hint of internationalism for starters: the rapper and singer K’Naan, who was born in Somalia and now lives in Canada (and whose band included a female keyboardist). An unannounced guest, John Legend, sang John Lennon’s vision of global citizenship, “Imagine.”
Mr. Young’s set was molten and unkempt, yet it had his own kind of finesse. He and Crazy Horse, on their first tour since 2004, often huddled near the center of the stage, bobbing back and forth until their heads nearly touched, and their songs sometimes welled up out of a caldron of drone and distortion.
